Energy for Africa: Why it matters
Every minute, 4 persons – mostly women and children – die needlessly from respiratory diseases brought on by cooking over open fires. That’s 2 million every year! A switch to efficient stoves and high-end fuels could prevent these deaths and eliminate much more physical suffering. (World Health Organization)
3 billion people (nearly half of humanity) are on the bottom-most rung of the “Energy Ladder,” i.e. they depend on firewood, charcoal and dung as their primary fuels.
Black carbon is the second-largest contributor to climate change, after carbon dioxide gas. Much black carbon is coming from billions of cooking fires in the developing world.
1.6 billion people (nearly one quarter of humanity) live without electricity. In parts of Africa, 95% of the population has no access to electric power.
Africa trails far behind every other region in terms of access to high-end energy, despite the fact that it has all the sources they need to be energy self-sufficient.
Without access to high-end energy, economic, social and environmental progress in Africa is stymied.
