Students enhance AHEAD's efforts

AHEAD Energy has always benefited by having college students involved in our efforts.  This summer two University of Colorado civil engineering students -- Andy Hemphill and Ankit Sharma -- will spend a month in Uganda assisting with projects at a school and rural development center.  At Circle of Peace School in Makindye they will evaluate the projects AHEAD has completed there and gather information for future projects. At Kagando Rural Development Center they will evaluate recently completed projects, assist in launching energy businesses, and develop an energy conservation program.

AHEAD is also currently working with the Education Department at Marietta College to engage students in developing an energy curriculum for grade school children in Africa.  Students in Prof. Kim Depue’s Science Methods class next fall will be involved develop the teaching modules based on the technical content other students have collected.  Students traveling to Ghana in 2012 with Dr. Ena Vulor will introduce the curriculum at a school with which the College has built a 5-year relationship.

AHEAD is taking part in a new Marietta College initiative called Next Gen: Engaging the Next Generation in Social Change.  Next Gen shapes students to be effective board members of nonprofit organizations.  Sean McKenna (Class of ‘12 Marketing, Management, Communications and Public Relations major)is participating with AHEAD for the next year as part of the Next Gen program.

In addition, the following Marietta College students are making valuable contributions to AHEAD:

Laura Finck (class of ’12 Political Science major), Samantha Thomas (class of ’13 undeclared major), and MaLisa Spring (Class of ’14 Biology major) will join AHEAD President & CEO MJ Ebenhack at the Aid and International Development Forum in Washington, DC.

Sarah Campfield (class of ’13 Human Resource Management major) is heading up fundraising initiatives aimed at the campus community.

Doug Miller (class of ’12 Information Systems major) and Robert Mathais (class of ’13Graphic Design major ) are serving as AHEAD’s first Social Networking Coordinators.
