About Us

AHEAD Energy is a Rochester, NY based 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation that studies, supports and promotes the transition to global low carbon energy systems in our state of the art research and testing facilities.
Renewables, energy storage, distributed generation and "smart grid" electronics are elements that can be combined at a variety of scales for power generation in both on and off-grid environments.
AHEAD operates an open-source Renewable Energy and Fuel Cell Commercialization Center which allows educators, scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs to integrate and optimized these elements, with a focus on use of alternative zero and low carbon fuels, such as hydrogen, ammonia, methanol and dimethyl ether. These synthetic fuels can be made in a variety of ways, including using petroleum, natural gas, coal, biomass, renewable electricity or nuclear energy. AHEAD sees that these fuels can be made at low cost and massive scale using coal and stranded natural gas with sequestration. This could be an important way to "green up" the fossil fuel industry. Our logo represents a green natural gas well...
AHEAD was founded in 1988 at the University of Rochester. We have a global view, but a particular interest in energy solutions which foster quality of life and economic development in rural areas.
